Kitchen scales for bread baking

Capacity, resolution, display placement and power matter at different moments.

Count the bowl in the load.

The platform carries ingredients plus the container. A tare button resets the displayed number; it does not increase the maximum physical load. Weigh or allow for your actual mixing bowl before comparing a planned batch with the scale’s stated capacity.

For one small loaf, a large maximum may not matter. For a heavy bowl and several loaves, reserve enough capacity for both. For tiny additions, compare resolution and the manufacturer’s stated measurement range; a high-capacity scale can still be a poor match for a very small quantity.

Resolution is not accuracy.

A 1 g display increment means the scale reports whole grams. It does not establish a ±1 g accuracy claim. This catalog keeps maximum capacity, display increments and any manufacturer accuracy statement separate.

If small additions are important, check the exact instrument specification or use an appropriate second scale. Do not infer laboratory precision from a decimal on the display.

Check the platform and controls.

A wide bowl can hide a fixed display. OXO’s pull-out display changes where the reading is viewed. The KD-8000 includes a percentage-weighing mode; that is a feature, not a requirement for baker’s math.

For a crowded counter, compare footprint and power arrangement. For longer ingredient additions, check auto-off behavior in the manual. For an existing suitable scale, use the free baker’s percentage calculator without replacing hardware.

Protect the scale during cleanup.

Follow the exact instructions for removable platforms, wiping and water exposure. A stainless platform does not mean the whole electronic unit is washable. Store the scale so other equipment does not load it unnecessarily.
